A Room-by-Room Home Safety Walkthrough for Older Adults

Use this practical walkthrough to spot everyday trip hazards and make routines easier to navigate. It is a starting point for discussion, not a clinical home assessment.

A familiar home can still become difficult to navigate when mobility or vision changes. A slow room-by-room walkthrough can identify practical concerns to discuss with the older adult and, when appropriate, a healthcare or home-safety professional. Do not make major changes without considering the person's preferences and needs.

Entryways and hallways

Check that routes are well lit, commonly used items are within reach, and walkways are not narrowed by boxes or loose cords. Notice thresholds, steps, and places where a walker or mobility aid may be difficult to maneuver. Keep a dependable phone or alert device accessible if the person uses one.

Kitchen and dining area

Look for heavy or frequently used items stored too high or low. Make sure the route to the table is clear and that seating is stable. Ask whether meal preparation is becoming tiring and whether help with shopping or meal setup would be useful.

Bathroom and bedroom

Pay attention to slippery surfaces, lighting, the path to the bathroom at night, and how easy it is to get in and out of a chair or bed. Ask a qualified professional about appropriate grab bars or equipment rather than relying on temporary fixtures or guessing where they should go.

Also check whether frequently used items can be reached without stretching, whether a chair feels stable, and whether the person can find a phone when needed. Ask before moving furniture or personal belongings: an arrangement that seems clearer to a visitor may be familiar and important to the person who lives there.

Turn observations into a plan

Write down specific concerns, ask the older adult what changes feel acceptable, and prioritize the most-used routes. If a fall, sudden weakness, or new confusion has occurred, contact an appropriate healthcare professional promptly. Environmental adjustments and non-medical home care can support routines, but they are not a substitute for medical evaluation.
